NAIROBI – AMBOSELI NATIONAL PARK |
|
This morning you are greeted at your hotel and transferred to the airport for your private helicopter flight, with your guide, to the Amboseli. Amboseli is a place of stark contrast, the name meaning “salty dust” in Maasai. Amboseli, despite its sometimes dry and dusty appearance, has an endless supply of water filtered through thousands of feet of volcanic rock from the snow melt of Mt. Kilimanjaro. These underground streams converge into clear fresh water springs in the heart of the park. The powder like dust is volcanic ash, which was thrown from Kilimanjaro millennia ago. An amazing spectacle of Amboseli is the shimmering dry lakebed where false mirages of populated horizons, punctuated by real herds of zebra and gnu hover in front of you.
The main attraction of Amboseli is its vast herds of elephant within the park. The bull elephants here have some of the largest tusks in Kenya.
Early morning and late afternoon photographic opportunities are incredible, with plentiful game and Mt. Kilimanjaro (the highest freestanding mountain in the world) providing an impressive and majestic backdrop. |

AMBOSELI – RIFT VALLEY LAKES |
|
We continue on our journey as we fly from the Amboseli to the Rift Valley Lakes area. Lake Naivasha is one of the few freshwater lakes of the Rift Valley and as well as being home to huge herds of buffalo and hippos – not to mention the bird life – there are large exploitations of flowers and vegetables grown for exportation and of great economic importance to the economy.
We visit Hell's Gate National Park, a tiny park located between Naivasha Lake and Longonot and Suswa volcanoes. The park provides a variety of wildlife, unusual flora and many species of birds and is one of the two only Kenyan parks where climbing, walking and biking are allowed. Covered by ashes from the Longonot eruption which occurred 100 years ago, the park is famous for its geothermal station, Lower Gorge and spectacular sceneries (cliffs, volcanoes, gorges, geothermal steam).
Our journey will also take us to Lake Nakuru is world famous for, and was created a National Park to protect, its stunning flocks of lesser flamingo which literally turn its shores pink. Its birdlife is world-renowned: a beacon for leading ornithologists, scientists and wildlife filmmakers. The park spans an attractive range of wooded and bush grassland around the lake, offering wide ecological diversity, from lake water, woodland to the rocky escarpment and ridges. Notable game within the lake includes hippo and clawless otters. On the shores roam waterbuck, Bohor’s Reedbuck and Zebra. The woodlands and forest are now home to both black and white rhino. In 1987 only two black rhino remained following the ravages of poaching. By creating a rhino sanctuary within the park and reintroducing a breeding herd from Laikipia, the KWS has now successfully re-established rhino in the park. |

Today we continue our explorations of the Rift Valley as our helicopter pilot takes us to Lake Baringo and Samatian Camp. Set on a small island with breath-taking views across the bronze waters of the Great Rift Valley’s Lake Baringo, Samatian offers the perfect mid-safari break. The beauty of Baringo and her surroundings is legendary – spectacular sunsets, a dazzling array of colorful bird life, Njemps fishermen continuing a trade little changed for over 200 years, and the imposing Laikipia Escarpment creating a magnificent backdrop to the lake and her inhabitants.
Third generation Kenyan, Caro Roberts, together with her partner Ross Withey, host guests on an exclusive basis. It is at Baringo that the Roberts’ family first settled and traditional settler hospitality is still a major priority at Samatian.
With tranquil surroundings and prolific birdlife, Samatian provides perfect relaxation and Ross and Caro are always on hand to tailor days to be as active or relaxed as guests wish. For the active, guests can enjoy boat rides to explore the lake and her inhabitants – hippo, crocodile, over 450 species of birds – whilst feeding fish eagles; visiting the hot springs with their steaming pools; enjoying escorted walks along the lakeside to view the prolific bird life; or trips further a field to Lake Bogoria, where guests can witness the spectacle of flocks of colorful flamingo feeding on the soda lake and views of the rarer mammals found in this area including Greater Kudu, or north to the frontier district and spend time with the intriguing Pokot Tribe. |

The Laikipia plateau stretches from the foothills of the Aberdares, across vast open plains to the Northern Frontier District and the Mathews Range. The region nurtures exceptional wildlife and cultural diversity, home of many communities including the Laikipiak Maasai and the Samburu tribes. SABUK – MASAI MARA GAME RESERVE & CONCESSION |
|
| Say goodbye to your heli pilot as you take your last flip to the world famous Masai Mara The Masai Mara is regarded as the most favorite and is definitely the most popular game reserve in Kenya, having over 140,000 visitors per year. The reserve lays approx 270km west of Nairobi and covers an area of approximately 1,510 sq km, bordering with the Serengeti National Park in Tanzania. The landscape is mostly open Savannah grasslands and acacia shrub lands. Starting any time from late July the wildebeest follow the rains and grazing to the wide and open grasslands of what has become known as "the Mara". They may be late, but they will always make the trip, driven by dry conditions in the Serengeti and led by the lightning and thunder to the north. Come November they start the homeward leg, bound again for the Serengeti. At this time of the year you will see a large number of lion, hippo, crocodile and vultures all of which prey on the weak and young migrating animals. Other game to be found in the Masai Mara at any time of the year include; elephants, baboons, gazelles, giraffes, jackals, cheetahs, leopards, hyenas, water buffalo, ostriches, and a large variety of antelope and birdlife. |
